Audrey --- strange but fresh “manzai” performers |

Audrey is a popular comedy duo consisting of two 30-year-old guys Masayasu Wakabayashi and Toshiaki Kasuga. They were classmates during their junior high and high school years, so they've been together for quite a while. In their manzai, or double act, Wakabayashi wears a business suit and so looks like a decent man. On the other hand, Kasuga has a peculiar hairstyle, wears a pink vest and white pants that make him look “kimoi (=disgusting)”.
They formed a duo in 2000, and finally began to appear in the media around 2007 or 2008. At the end of 2008, they got a chance to perform in the final contest of the M-1 Comedy Grand Prix. They were placed second, but the result was that their popularity skyrocketed after the Grand Prix was aired, as if they'd won the contest!
In standard manzai, one person says something silly and the other one reproves him/her. But Audrey's manzai is a little different──Wakabayashi says something normal, and yet Kasuga reproves Wakabayashi, so Wakabayashi gets upset. Here's an example:
Wakabayashi: I happened to see a guy pickpocketing the other day... Kasuga: Tell me in detail! <hits Wakabayashi>
Wakabayashi: That's exactly what I'm trying to do now!
Their new style manzai stands out among all the other rookie comedians, and now Audrey appear in the media every day. They even perform in TV ads for large companies such as Nintendo or KFC. They're probably enjoying this stardom, but one side effect is that they might be way too busy, so that they won't even have time to think up and rehearse any new manzai scripts! |
